A small eco-minded homestead

Rainbow Root specializes in ADGA registered Nigerian Dwarf goats, Black Copper Marans chickens, rainbow layers, and meat birds. We believe in nature here. Sustaining and working with the land rather than against it. The care and quality of life for every individual animal is of utmost importance on the homestead. I strive to improve on the breeds raised here. Growing sturdy animals that conform to the breed standards as closely as possible. I'm always happy to answer any questions you may have! What's in a name?

​

When I first started tossing ideas around of what to call my farm I tried to put together things that embodied my future plans for my farm. Things that represent my location or family. At the time I only had chickens and my goal was to get a variety of breeds and have a rainbow of eggs from white and brown to blue, green and chocolate. I was also planning to eventually grow uncommon colors of veggies and fruits; things like purple carrots and yellow watermelons. I wanted to allow people to eat the rainbow. Coming from a nutrition background, that is a general way to describe how you should be eating. I wanted to bring it to life. Also at the time, I was living in the town Root. The town of Root was where I started growing my roots as a first generation farmer. So, I landed on Rainbow Root and it stuck. The homestead part encompasses the desire of the way I want to live. I want to live intentionally and use all mother nature has to offer. Self sufficiency was(and is) a major goal.

As time has gone on I have grown to add other, more obscure meanings. We all come from different backgrounds and upbringings. We all have a different rainbow in our roots that may or may not be seen by the world. Even with very different roots, we are all still here growing and blooming together, albeit differently. I think it's a beautiful thing and I love how different, yet similar, we all are as a species. So I stuck with Rainbow Root Homestead as my farm name because it embodies my beginnings, my future and my life philosophy.

Rainbow Root's ADGA herd name is "KANBONEMOS" which means "curve of the sky".
